Candidate Requirements

To be eligible for candidacy for a Canadian federal election, the Canada Elections Act say every candidate must meet several requirements, including:

  • Being a citizen of Canada and at least 18 years old by election day
  • Not being prohibited by exception [Elections Canada]
  • Nominating an Official Agent
  • Appointing an Auditor (if campaign receives or spends > $10,000, if the candidate receives > 10% of votes)
  • Filing various paperwork with Elections Canada, before, during, and after the election

Some of the key differences include:

  • Being a registered member of the RPC in good standing
  • Attesting to supporting the Manifesto of Human Needs
  • Committing not to ‘cross the floor,’ if elected [Wikipedia]
